The Ottey Centre is a vibrant, inclusive and friendly environment where people are welcome, feel they belong, and which reflects and meets our local community’s needs.
We are committed to providing services and activities that meet the needs of our community members from South Lake and the surrounding suburbs.
We provide information and referrals, advocacy, emergency relief, and food relief, along with a diverse range of activities for families, individuals and community groups.
Our centre stands since 1990. Opened by the City of Cockburn, originally known as “Bert Ottey Complex”, named after Bert Ottey.
Sgt. OTTEY, Albert Joseph |
R.A.A.F. – 45351
‘Bert’ was born Albert Joseph Ottey, 1913, in the small wheatbelt town of Yoting, WA. Growing up in South Fremantle, Bert later moved to Hamilton Hill where he met and married his wife (Ivy Winfield).
In 1936 he commenced work at the Fremantle Roads Board, where, for eight years he operated an Ansaldo Dozer/Loader.
During WWII Bert served in the Royal Australian Air Force. During this war, Bert’s personal truck was loaned to the Roads Board to assist in building local roads.
Bert worked almost exclusively for the Fremantle then Cockburn Roads Board which later became the Shire and City of Cockburn. He was well respected and heavily involved in the development of Bibra Lake as a parkland.
Acknowledged for being the longest serving employee, his last position at the City of Cockburn was Senior Health and Building Inspector.
In recognition of his service, the ‘Bert Ottey Complex ’ was named in his honour in 1990.
‘Bert Ottey’ died in 1995, but his legacy lives on in the ‘Ottey Centre’.
